Elderly Tenants Organize Against Evictions Amid AI-Driven Speculation

Laura Chiera spoke yesterday during a rally at 1120 Jackson Street, a 16-unit residential building where seven long-term elderly tenants are facing eviction based on questionable claims. During the rally, Shelby Nancio, an attorney with the Asian Law Caucus, spoke about her clients, who have organized a tenants’ union to fight the evictions.

The actions of the building’s new owners follow a playbook that drove up rents and displaced residents across the city during the last tech boom. Real estate speculators are targeting long-standing community members in anticipation of an influx of higher-paid workers associated with the AI boom, putting hundreds of elderly residents at risk of displacement and homelessness.

Although LAE does not represent the tenants at 1120 Jackson Street, we represent more than 450 clients each year who face similar threats of eviction, displacement, and housing instability. Read the article here.
