As we step into October, a month recognized globally for raising awareness about the issues seniors and adults with disabilities face, we at Legal Assistance to the Elderly (LAE) are proud of the vital work we do for these vulnerable communities. 

Today, on October 1st, we join the world in celebrating the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. This year’s theme, “Aging with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide,” resonates deeply with LAE’s mission of empowering seniors and adults with disabilities to live independently and with dignity. 

At LAE, we believe that access to justice is fundamental to ensuring that older adults and individuals with disabilities are protected from exploitation, eviction, and the loss of vital healthcare or income.  

Our impact in 2023 speaks to the dedication and passion of our team and the generosity of supporters like you: 

• We provided critical legal services to over 2,300 people, advocating for their housing, healthcare, benefits, and protection from abuse. 
• Through our Eviction Defense and Housing Preservation program, 93% of clients facing homelessness remained housed. 
• Our Consumer Law Team helped save over $200,000 for clients, ensuring their financial security. 

These achievements are life changing for our clients, and the need for our services continues to grow. With seniors projected to account for nearly one in three San Franciscans by 2030, LAE’s work has never been more crucial.
