Annie’s Story
O’Keeffe’s Bar in the Richmond has been a center of community for over 50 years. The Chronicle calls it “a home” thanks to its proprietor Annie O’Keeffe. And when she faced eviction from her apartment of 37 years she turned to LAE.
As Annie aged, she began to need more help around the house because of her bad back. She asked the landlord, as she is legally allowed, to have Mike, her partner of over 20 years, move into her 2-bedroom apartment to help her out. Mike paid rent at his own apartment but had begun to spend most of his time at Annie’s place.
The Landlord unlawfully refused and then sued to evict Annie for having Mike stay with her. After extensive litigation, on the eve of trial, LAE was able to settle the case with the landlord recognizing Mike as an occupant and dismissing the case.
Today, Mike and Annie are happy in their home and Annie can still be found at the helm of O’Keeffe’s.
